November 23, 2017 | Israel’s Iron Dome short range missile defense system is being bought by the UK to protect the Falkland Islands, according to reports in British media. The system is produced by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with software developed by Israeli startup mPrest. A British spokesperson told Calcalist that they selected Rafael for a $105 million contract to provide the main computer system and boost defense of the Falkland Islands following an open competition. The acquisition is part of a $374 million defense package for the Falklands, which the British Ministry of defense announced in 2016. The system will be called Sky Sabre. The final decision came after France signed a deal to sell five Super Etendard combat jets to Argentina. Over the past decade, the Iron Dome system has shot down more than 1,200 rockets in Israel. The Rafael Advanced Defense Systems was founded in 1948 in Haifa.
